What are home care packages and how can they benefit me?
The Australian Government offers financial assistance to eligible older Australians who have registered with My Aged Care and undergone a needs assessment by their local Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT).
There are four levels of support available ranging from Home Care Level 1 – Basic Care Needs, to Home Care Level 4 – High Care Needs.
Based on the ACAT level assessment, the Government then provides home care package funding to you or your loved one to be used with a home care service provider of your choice.
Focus Care Solutions can help you through the My Aged Care and ACAT assessment process to obtain home care package support. We also offer four home care packages directly aligned to the ACAT Home Care Levels 1 to 4.
Level 4 – High Level Home Care
The Level 4 home care package provides a subsidy of up to $135.87 per day to support individuals requiring up to 15 hours of care multiple times per week.
Level 4 High Level Home Care services can include minor home modifications such as ramps and rail installation, personal care and meal preparation, medication support, nursing support, domestic work, transport, podiatry, physiotherapy and occupational therapy, art therapy and social engagement and support.
Case Study: Daily care for Mr Lin
As the result of a severe stroke, Mr Lin has limited mobility and requires regular daily in-home care. His Level 4 home care package covers the cost of a Focus Care Solutions Care Worker visiting every morning to assist with showering, grooming and domestic work as well as a physiotherapist to visit once a week to help with exercises and maintaining functionality. All of the Focus Care Solutions carer workers who attend to Mr Lin know the exercises he should do and help him complete them while they’re assisting him with other things. As a result of our services Mr Lin has been able to continue to live at home with his family.
Level 3 – Intermediate Home Care
The Level 3 home care package provides a subsidy of up to $89.37 per day to support individuals requiring intermediate care such as personal care and allied health support.
Level 3 Intermediate Home Care services can include minor home modifications such as ramps and rail installation, personal care and meal preparation, medication support, nursing support, domestic work, transport, podiatry, physiotherapy and occupational therapy, art therapy and social engagement and support for up to nine hours per week.
Case Study: Getting Mrs Trevethan mobile
Mrs Trevethan has moderate dementia and is recovering from a severe fall, which required her to have hip surgery. Her home care package covers the cost of a Focus Care Solutions carer worker visiting three times a week to assist with showering, grooming and housework, as well as an Art Therapist who visits once a week to help her with some creativity and memory-based activities. After many months, Mrs Trevethan asked if we could help her purchase a mobility aid with money that had accrued in her home care package account, which we were able to do with the help of one of our physiotherapists.
Level 2 – Low Level Home Care
The Level 2 home care package is a low level of care package offering a subsidy of up to $40.65 per day to support individuals who are still relatively independent, especially in terms of personal wellbeing but are starting to find household chores a little much to manage on their own.
Focus Care Solutions Level 2 Low Level Home Care services provides regular support to help retain in-home living and can include domestic work, transport services, shopping, gardening, podiatry, physiotherapy, fitness and exercise or social and group classes for up to four hours of support per week.
Case Study: Mrs Panopoulos: Social butterfly
Mrs Panopoulos is in good physical health but is suffering from early onset dementia. Her home care package provides her with a dedicated Focus Care Solutions Care Worker who attends her twice a week to give her daughter a break, help with light housework and take Mrs Panopoulos shopping. As relatable and reliable social support is vital in staving off the effects of her dementia, Focus Care Solutions matched Mrs Panopoulos with a Greek-speaking care worker to make her feel comfortable and encourage verbal and social engagement.
Level 1 - Basic Home Care
The Level 1 home care package is a basic entry level of care package offering a subsidy of up to $22.35 per day to support individuals who are still highly independent but due to injury or illness could use a little help around the house.
Level 1 Basic Home Care services can include light domestic work, cleaning, laundry or gardening for a couple of hours per week with services determined based on your needs.
Case Study: Lending Mr Emmanuel a hand
Mr Emmanuel is an active and healthy 67 year old, however he has moderate arthritis in his hips. Mr Emmanuel has a large house and garden and his doctor has recommended avoiding overly strenuous activities. His Level 1 home care package subsidy covers the cost of a Focus Care Solutions worker visiting a couple of hours a week to do the gardening, mow his lawn and change the bed sheets.
If over time Mr Emmanuel’s living conditions change or his arthritis intensifies, Focus Care Solutions will help him to be reassessed by ACAT to achieve a Level 2 home care package.
